The first direct Maersk main line service which has called at International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) recently.

ICTT received the mainline cargo vessel MV Newyorker with 1,185 twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs) of cashew from West Africa.

The vessel, operated by the global shipping major Maersk Line, also has transshipment containers for Tuticorin and Mangalore, apart from Kerala, sources from DP World said. It may be recalled that DP World operates ICTT.

The raw cashew import season from West Africa to Kochi starts in June-July and continues until late August.

Maersk Line has planned five vessels in this service. West Africa is a major sourcing hub for raw cashew. This service is expected to cater mainly to the growing raw cashew imports from Africa. There is a major inflow of raw cashew to processing units in Kollam and other parts of South India and this service will play a pivotal role for the trade.

Maersk Line is the global container division of AP Moller – Maersk Group and its fleet comprises close to 550 vessels that have a capacity to carry 2.2 million containers, corresponding to more than 3,600,000 TEUs.
