IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) expects to commission at least five packages, which are part of its ongoing Rs 16,000-crore modernisation and expansion project, between January and March 2013.
Instead of waiting for the completion of the entire project, the firm plans to commission all the packages which are ready. It is learnt that the above five packages would be ready between Jan-Mar 2013.
ISP, which is part of Steel Authority of India, would sell products from the above units either in the market or to other SAIL units. The project is one of the single-largest investments in this part of the country.
While the ore handling plant has already been commissioned and the sinter plant is ready, the coke oven battery and the wire rod mill are expected to be commissioned shortly.
Instead of leaving the ready plants idle, the firm decided to commission these packages and go for merchant-sales of some of the products (wire mill) and ‘sell’ other products ( coke oven, sinter plant) to its sister units such as Durgapur Steel and Bokaro Steel.
It is learnt that one of the packages that would be commissioned is the blast furnace, which is the biggest of its kind in the country with a daily capacity of 8,000 tonne. It would give a 2.5 million tonne output.
