Union Minister of Power, Manohar Lal, embarked on a four-day official visit to Bhutan on Thursday to further strengthen the longstanding partnership between India and Bhutan, particularly in the hydropower and energy sectors.

During the visit, Lal will review the progress of key bilateral hydropower projects, including the 1,200 MW Punatsangchhu-I and 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu-II hydroelectric projects, which are central to the India-Bhutan energy cooperation framework, an official statement from the Ministry of Power has said.

He is also scheduled to participate in important project milestones and interact with officials and technical teams involved in their implementation and operation.

The visit reinforces the shared commitment of both countries to deepen cooperation in clean energy, enhance cross-border power trade, and support Bhutan’s socio-economic development. Hydropower collaboration remains a cornerstone of India-Bhutan relations, delivering mutual benefits through sustainable energy generation and strengthened economic ties.

Cross-border electricity trade with Bhutan stood at around 9,500 million units (MUs) in FY2024-25, growing at nearly 6 per cent year-on-year. Indian companies like Tata Power, in partnership with Druk Green Power Corp., are currently working on the 1,125 MW Dorjilung Hydroelectric Project and the 600 MW Khorlochhu Hydroelectric Project in the Himalayan nation.

Lal will also hold discussions with senior Bhutanese leadership to further advance bilateral cooperation across sectors of mutual interest.
