India imported 7.2 per cent of its total oil import in 2012-13 from the sanction-hit Iran, down from, down from 10.5 per cent in the previous fiscal.
Of the 182.5 million tonne of crude oil imported in 2012-13, supply from Iran accounted for about 13.3 million tonne.
In 2011-12, India imported 18.1 million tonne from the country. These were behind 32.5 million tonne from Saudi Arabia and 24.1 million tonne from Iraq.
Thus, India reduced the import of oil from Iran by over 26.5 per cent in 2012-13. India reduced its oil dependence on Iran as the US and European sanctions made it difficult to ship oil from the Persian Gulf nation.
Following this, Iran became the sixth-largest crude oil supplier to India compared to the third-largest position last year. The supplies from Iran were behind Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Venezuela, Kuwait and the UAE.
In 2010-11, Iran was IndiaÂ’s second biggest supplier of crude oil after Saudi Arabia.
Iran had in 2009-10 supplied 21.2 million tonne, which declined to 18.5 million tonne in 2010-11 and to 18.1 million tonne in the year after.
