About 14,000 km length of National Highways has been converted into four lanes during the last ten years i.e. 2004 to 2012 by National Highways Authority of India, Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Tushar A Chaudhary stated in the Rajya Sabha recently.

As compared to Item-rate contract, construction risk is passed on to the ontractor/ concessionaire in EPC/ Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) mode. As such no cost and time overrun is contemplated in these modes of execution. So far, no project has been completed on EPC mode.

Four-lanning of Panvel-Indapur section of NH-17 has been awarded on BOT basis. Mode of execution for development of Indapur-Zarap section of NH-17 is not yet decided and will depend on the market response.
