A committee headed by Planning Commission member Arun Maira, studying the proposal to make it mandatory for bidders of future ultra mega power projects (UMPPs) to buy only Indian equipment is likely to submit its report soon. The proposal will not be applicable to similar projects that are in Chhattisgarh and Orissa as the bidding for those has already been initiated.
However, the proposal will impact eight upcoming ultra mega power projects as the bidding process for for those has not been initiated yet.
Each project will cost between Rs 18,000 crore and Rs 20,000 crore.
