The launch strengthens regional air connectivity across Bihar’s Seemanchal region, linking it to Kolkata’s aviation hub and IndiGo’s expansive network.

IndiGo, India’s largest airline by fleet and market share, has announced the launch of direct flights between Kolkata and Purnea, Bihar, starting September 15. Operated thrice weekly using ATR aircraft, the new route marks Purnea’s debut on India’s commercial aviation map and makes IndiGo the first airline to commence operations from the newly built airport.

Purnea becomes IndiGo’s 94th domestic and 137th overall destination, and its fourth in Bihar after Patna, Gaya and Darbhanga. The service is expected to enhance regional connectivity across the Seemanchal region, linking it to eastern India’s aviation hub in Kolkata and IndiGo’s wider domestic and international network.

“We are proud to further strengthen regional connectivity with the addition of Purnea to our growing network,” said Vinay Malhotra, Head of Sales, IndiGo. “An emerging centre for trade and industry in Bihar, Purnea will benefit from direct access to our eastern hub.”

The airport has been developed under the UDAN Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), which subsidises flights to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities to improve access and affordability. The launch is expected to catalyse infrastructure development in Purnea, supporting its agriculture and food processing sectors, while also fostering growth in healthcare and education.
