Set to be operational by early 2028, the facility marks a strategic step in IndiGo’s ambition to become a global aviation leader by 2030.
IndiGo commenced construction of its world-class maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility in Bengaluru on Tuesday.
The carrier held a bhoomi poojan (groundbreaking ceremony) at Kempegowda International Airport to mark the initiation of the ambitious project.
India’s largest airline by fleet size and market share will build one of the country’s largest MROs on 31 acres of land recently allocated by Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), the airport’s operator. The facility will be three times larger than the combined capacity of IndiGo’s existing MROs in Delhi and Bengaluru.
In a short address, Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, said: “This also strengthens our operational presence in Bengaluru, which is one of our largest bases with over 200 daily flights. This is also an important step towards shaping the future of Indian aviation by developing a holistic aviation ecosystem in the nation.”
The new MRO will feature up to 12 bays and the capability to service both narrow-body and wide-body aircraft. The development reflects IndiGo’s broader strategy to position itself as a leading global aviation player by the end of the decade.
Construction has begun within two months of IndiGo signing an MoU with BIAL for land allocation in May 2025. The facility is expected to be fully operational by early 2028, creating over 1,000 engineering and technical jobs.
With a fleet of more than 400 aircraft, dedicated MRO infrastructure will offer IndiGo significant advantages in aircraft availability, cost efficiency and turnaround time. The project is also expected to strengthen Karnataka’s aerospace and defence ecosystem.
The ceremony was attended by senior personnel from BIAL and IndiGo, along with dignitaries from the Karnataka state government.
