Sumant Sinha is the Chairman and CEO of ReNew Power. He brings his vast experience in the Indian renewable eneÂrgy space, international finance, comÂbined with unique operating experience to the firm. Prior to setting up ReNew Power, Sumant was the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Suzlon Energy. Sumant was responsible for refinancing SuzlonÂ’s entire outstanding debt worth $3 billion, raised an additional $800 million and restructured $500 million worth of foreign convertible bonds in an extremely difficult external operating environment. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in the product development process, customer relations and ensured seamless coordination between various technical departments of the organisation.
Before joining Suzlon, Sumant set up the Suzlon Energy.venture in the retail sector in India, Aditya Birla Retail (ABRL) and was its founder CEO. From 2002 to 2007, Sumant was the Group CFO of the Aditya Birla Group and was responsible for some of the largest acquisitions in IndiaÂ’s corporate history including Novelis, Idea, Ultratech etc. Sumant was an emerging markets investment banker for over ten years, first at Citibank in New York followed by ING Barings in London and then New York. In his last job at ING Barings out of New York, he was responsible for the firmÂ’s debt business in Latin America.
Sumant holds an engineering degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, and a Masters in Finance from Columbia UniversityÂ’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). He is a Chartered Financial Analyst, was the Chairman of the Renewable Energy Committee of the Confederation of Indian Industries.
