Jaipur’s roads face lack of green cover

Rajasthan’s capital Jaipur has no sufficient green cover. As per the Master Plan 2025, the city should have the mandatory 20 per cent green cover, but it has only 11.3 per cent of its area under green cover. As per Master Plan 25, the entry roads from Delhi, Ajmer, Sikar and Agra supposed to have green corridor of 30 to 45 metre on either side of the approach.

In 2010, the State government had launched a ‘Harit Rajasthan’ campaign in order to develop woodland parks and plant trees, but the results were far from satisfactory.

Now, the Jaipur Development Authority has taken initiative to meet the Master Plan requirements, and it recently held a meeting with the forest department. But JDA and forest officials admit that increasing green cover in the city is a herculean task and needs sustained efforts and enough resources.

Sources said that apart from lack of sincere efforts, non-availability of land has been a major roadblock in the past.
