Under the partnership, JFE Engineering India will lead the EPC of two waste-to-energy plants in Andhra Pradesh, each designed to process nearly 1,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily.

Indian integrated waste management company Antony Waste Handling Cell Ltd has secured investment from Japan-based JFE Engineering Corp for two waste-to-energy plants in Andhra Pradesh. This marks the first Japanese foreign direct investment into India’s waste-to-energy (WTE) sector, as well as the entry of global clean-tech leader JFE Engineering into the Indian market.

As part of the partnership, JFE Engineering will invest approximately ¥750 million (₹43.7 billion) to acquire a 25 per cent equity stake in Antony Waste’s two special purpose vehicles (SPVs), with the remaining 75 per cent held by the Indian company.

Further, JFE Engineering India will undertake the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of both waste-to-energy plants, each with nearly 1,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste inflow capacity daily. It will leverage JFE Group’s experience across 250-plus global waste-to-energy facilities. The company will deploy advanced technologies, digital monitoring systems, and global environmental standards, while also supporting operations and capability building.

The investment is being made specifically into the special purpose vehicles developing the Kadapa and Kurnool waste-to-energy projects in Andhra Pradesh, with the project-level partnership aligned with long-term execution and value creation.

This investment marks a significant milestone in the two nations’ strategic partnership on sustainable infrastructure, aligned with the broader India-Japan Joint Vision 2025, which targets ¥10 trillion (Rs 5.82 trillion) of Japanese investment into India’s priority sectors.

Commenting on the development, Jose Jacob, Chairman & Managing Director, Antony Waste Handling Cell, said, “Partnering with JFE Engineering enables us to combine global technology leadership with deep local expertise to build scalable and environmentally responsible infrastructure. We see this as a long-term partnership anchored in strong execution, compliance, and shared commitment to sustainable outcomes.”

Akira Usui, Director of Recycling Business Promotion Division, Environmental Solutions Sector, JFE Engineering Corp., added, “This investment reflects our strong belief in India’s waste-to-energy opportunity and in Antony Waste as a trusted and capable partner. As our first investment in India’s waste sector, it underscores our long-term commitment to bringing advanced technology and engineering excellence to support sustainable infrastructure development in the country.”

India generates nearly 150,000 tonnes per day of municipal solid waste, yet less than 5 per cent of its estimated 5,600 MW waste-to-energy potential has been harnessed, highlighting a significant opportunity for scalable solutions.
