JNPT asks trade bodies to nominate members

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) asked trade associations to nominate their representatives in the board of the port as the tenure of the earlier board of trustees with 16 members ended on March 31.

The board of trustees of JN Port is constituted by the
government for a two-year term. Currently, the board has only seven members and hence the authority asked various trade bodies to fill four representatives.

The port wrote letter to Indian National ShipownersÂ’ Association, Mumbai and Nhava-Sheva Ship-Agents Association, Bombay Custom House AgentsÂ’ Association and Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry asking them to nominate their respective representatives to the board of trustees of the port.

It is worth noting that the board took the decision to implement the Rs 8,200 crore container terminal project as a single contract at a meeting attended only by seven members.

It is also remarkable that all the seven members are nominees of government. This is one more than the quorum required to approve decisions. The government nominees are fully empowered to take key decisions, reports indicate.
