Agency reports indicate that Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) invited bids from firms to set up a 7 mw wind power plant at a cost of Rs 48 crore to meet its energy requirement.
The proposed plant may help the port save around 30 percent on energy costs, agency reports indicate.
In order to reduce its dependence on power from outside sources, the port plans to set up renewable energy plants for captive purpose.
It is reported that this is the first port in India to set up a captive wind power plant and the plant may meet around 25 percent of its energy need.
The port authority expect the proposed plant to be operational by April 2014.
The port will outsource generation through a bidding process and the company that offers the lowest cost per unit will be awarded the project, feasibility studies for which have already been done. The winning company can set up the plant anywhere in the country.
According to some reports, the minimum capacity of a wind mill has been prescribed at 800 kw, which means that up to a dozen such mills could be erected.
