Through two major acquisitions, the leading mining equipment and service provider has established a clear presence in a new market for the company.
With roots that date back to 1884, Joy Global has long been one of the most innovative equipment manufacturers in the world, but the company isn´t done breaking new ground.

Through two major acquisitions, the leading mining equipment and service provider has established a clear presence in a new market for the company: hard rock. The company´s 2014 acquisition of underground hard rock mining assets from Mining Technologies International (MTI), built up its line of robust, reliable hard rock equipment. And in June 2015, it acquired Montabert from Doosan Holding France, adding to its offerings market-leading Montabert rock drills and breakers renowned for their high performance and low operating cost.

Both moves increased the products and services Joy Global can offer its hard rock customers, including drifter conversions for a variety of machines. Montabert drifters are compatible on all major and most OEM machines, including: jumbo drills, bolter drills, longhole drills, shaft jumbo drills and tunneling drills. Drifter conversions result in improved reliability, reduced production cost and consumable cost, improved penetration rates, lower noise level and lower maintenance costs.

Joy Global experts can handle all drifter conversions, regardless of the drill manufacturer. Its experts use an established inquiry process and custom selection tools to determine the best solution to match the client´s specifications. Drifter conversions are handled at any of the company´s worldwide service facilities. Joy Global drifter conversions and rebuilds come with a new, three-month warranty on the drifter unit and always include the use of genuine Montabert parts for both conversions and repairs.

Up next for the company´s underground hard rock line is the ongoing release of enhanced products, such as its new 16TD truck. Now commercially available, the 16TD is based on the popular DT-1804 model, which has been a stalwart unit in the product line for many years. The 16TD takes that reliable model and builds on it to include lower hood lines for improved visibility, a digital operator display, shorter turning radius, ground level maintenance and faster speed ramps.

Several similar enhancements are in the works. The company´s hard rock ready trucks and loaders are already designed with operator safety, reliability and ease of use/maintenance in mind, and more are being upgraded to enhance those features. The company has newly launched a 4LD loader, a comprehensive re-design of its LT-350 loader. The new 4LD machine will feature increased carrying capacity and z-bar link improvement, first time in a machine of this class; better operator comfort/safety due to the ROPS/FOPS enclosed cab with climate control and upgraded controls; and increased ease of maintenance due to improved design.

Its new family of underground Joy loaders, with more products set to debut this year, features its proprietary Switched Reluctance (SR) Hybrid Drive technology, which significantly reduces fuel consumption and enables faster acceleration, resulting in more tons mined for the hard rock market.
