Generating 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually, the plant sets the pace for sustainable operations and maritime decarbonisation across India.

In a major boost to India’s efforts to develop a robust green hydrogen ecosystem, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has successfully launched a 1 MW green hydrogen power plant within four months of Prime Minister Narendra Modi laying the foundation stone for a 10 MW project.

Inaugurating the facility on Thursday, Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, hailed it as a significant step towards realising Prime Minister Modi’s 2030 vision for a cleaner, greener, and self-reliant future under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

“The Deendayal Port Authority has turned that vision into reality, a shining example of speed, scale, and skill under Maritime India Vision 2030,” noted Sonowal.

The plant is expected to accelerate maritime decarbonisation and promote sustainable port operations across India’s coastline.

Congratulating the port’s leadership and the engineering prowess displayed by the plant developer Larsen & Toubro, the minister said, “I commend the entire team of Deendayal Port Authority, led by the chairman, and appreciate the engineers of L&T for delivering this complex project with remarkable speed and precision.”

He highlighted the port’s ongoing commitment to green initiatives, referencing the earlier deployment of India’s first indigenously built green tug. Praising the fully Aatmanirbhar (self-reliant) hydrogen system developed entirely with domestic expertise, Sonowal added that it would inspire other Indian ports to adopt eco-friendly and innovative technologies.

Minister of State Shantanu Thakur also praised the achievement, stating, “The commissioning of this Green Hydrogen plant at Deendayal Port Authority highlights India’s growing leadership in clean energy, innovation, and self-reliance. I congratulate the entire team for taking this bold step towards a sustainable maritime future.”

Launched in January 2023, the National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to make India a global hub for the production, usage, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives. Anchored by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the programme brings together 11 ministries, including the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, to deliver this clean energy transition.
