In Kerala, national highways are likely to widened into 45 metre, if the State government implement the the suggestion made by the annual conference of district collectors. The conference was held in Thiruvananthapuram on October 23.

The State Chief Secretary Bharat Bhushan said that the consensus to fix the NH width at 45 metre was a suggestion put forward by district collectors but the government is yet to take a decision on the matter.

He added that the collectors decided at the meeting to acquire an additional 15 metres — 7.5 metres each on both sides – on 30-metre-wide stretches. The chief secretary said the highways witnessed a rise in number of accidents and traffic jams as they did not have adequate width.

The Chief Secretary said that even the Kerala government’s view is to widen the NH into 45 m The collectors have also decided to intensify the tax collection in the coming days to address the acute financial crisis faced by the state.
