Krishnapatnam Port Company (KPCL) is in the process of increasing the number of berths to almost 20 in the north, south and west side of the ports in the next two to three yearÂ’s time.
The promoters have invested close to Rs 5,000 crore in creating 10 multi-purpose berths including two for containers in KPCL. However, the plan is to have 42 berths in 5 yearÂ’s time, sources from the port said.
The port proposes to design berths as per its customersÂ’ requirement and emerge as one of the largest ports in the country.
Meanwhile, the port plans to boost connectivity infrastructure by widening road and setting up a new road.
KPCL plans to widen the existing 4 lane road and railway track between Venkatachalam junction and the PortÂ’s zero point. Likewise, another road from Nellore via Muthukur is being widened.
It also plans to set up a new road that would decrease the travelling distance to the port from hennai by almost 40 kilometer (km).
Traders have to travel up to Venkatachalam junction in Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh (about 155 km from Chennai) and turn right to reach the port that is 25 km away. The planned road will take a deviation at Naidupetta and travel through Kota and reach Krishnapatnam.
The doubling of railway track up to Venkatachalam junction will be completed by April, sources from the port said.
