Louis Berger International Inc.´s involvement as consultant on airport projects in Navi Mumbai and Goa has come under question following its admission to US authorities that employees paid bribes to officials to win contracts in India. The company said earlier the allegations of wrongdoing only pertained to water projects in Goa and Guwahati.
The New Jersey-based construction management company had admitted to violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) to the US Department of Justice (DoJ). It will pay $17.1 million as penalty for bribing officials in Indonesia, Vietnam and Kuwait, apart from India. The two Indian projects referred to are the Rs 14,573 crore facility planned in Navi Mumbai and the Rs 3,000 crore second airport in Goa. ¨All of our projects in India between 1998 and 2010 have been investigated as part of the DoJ investigations,¨ said Regine DelaCruz, a spokeswoman for Louis Berger.
