In Punjab’s Ludhiana, the move to upgrade Sahnewal airport has hit the first road block with some of the villagers filing objections to the acquisition of their land. According to Section IV of the Land Acquisition Act, people whose land is acquired can file objections, if any, within a month. As the government had on June 15 issued the notification for acquiring land in 10 villages in Sahnewal area for upgradation of the airport and construction of a mega industrial park project, the deadline for submitting the objections ended on July 15.

Confirming that some of the villagers have filed objections to the government move, Rakesh Kumar Verma, Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority – (GLADA) chief administrator, said that a land acquisition collector is looking into the objections. The collector will submit his report to the government, which will issue another notification under Section VI of the Act. Hopefully, GLADA will be able to complete the acquisition process within six months, he added.
