Major ports like Mumbai Port Trust, VO Chidambaranar Port, Kolkata Port Trust, and Chennai Port Trust witnessed decline in employee strength at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 5 percent or above.

This was observed in a study titled titled ‘Employment Scenario at Major, Minor and Intermediate Ports in India’ conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

The study found that employee strength at the countryÂ’s 12 major ports contracted at a CAGR of 5 percent during the 10-year period from 2001 to 2010, to 55,400 from 83,700.

Paradip, Mormugao, New Mangalore and Cochin were the other Major Ports where staff numbers fell at the rate of 3 to 4 percent.

Ennore was the only Major Port where the number of employees increased from about 15 to over 86 during the period under review, at a CAGR of about 19 percent.
