The partnership marks a strategic alignment between two leading public sector players to accelerate India’s transition towards resilient, low-carbon energy infrastructure.

Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) and Oil India Limited (OIL) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate across the liquefied natural gas (LNG) value chain and explore emerging opportunities in clean energy. The partnership aims to fast-track the adoption of LNG in long-haul transport and support India’s broader energy transition goals.

MGL, a leading city gas distribution company, has already established LNG retail stations and is actively expanding its clean energy portfolio. OIL, a Maharatna public sector enterprise with integrated capabilities across the oil and gas value chain, is ramping up gas production and advancing its roadmap for clean energy deployment.

“This collaboration with OIL will help accelerate the adoption of cleaner fuels in the long-haul transport sector. It enables corporates to shift towards greener logistics and reduce their pollution footprint,” said Ashu Shinghal, Managing Director, MGL.

“Our focus will be on assessing the technical and commercial viability of LNG in heavy-duty transport and scaling up feasible pilots,” added Trailukya Borgohain, Director (Operations), OIL.

Under the MoU, the two organisations will jointly evaluate LNG applications in freight mobility, industrial use, and decentralised energy systems. The partnership also includes exploring clean energy projects that align with India’s net-zero ambitions and infrastructure decarbonisation targets.

The move reflects growing momentum in India’s gas-based economy, with LNG positioned as a transitional fuel for reducing emissions in hard-to-abate sectors. The partnership reflects a strategic alignment between two leading public sector players to accelerate India’s shift towards resilient, low-carbon energy infrastructure.
