Recently, Union Petroleum minister M Veerappa Moily commissioned the 1,000-km-long pipeline set up by public-sector gas transmission major GAIL to transport natural gas from Dabhol in Maharashtra to Bangalore.
Following this, GAIL started delivering gas to its customers in Bangalore through the pipeline. Toyota Kirloskar Auto Parts was the first company to receive the gas, which it is using at its captive 6.5 mw power plant in Bidadi, near Bangalore.
GAIL set up the Dabhol-Bangalore pipeline with an investment of Rs 4,500 crore and is designed to handle 16 mmscmd of natural gas.
The state-run firm plans to use the pipeline to distribute piped gas to the residents of Bangalore in future. Gail also inked a gas transmission agreement with Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) to supply 2.1 mmscmd (million metric standard cubic metres per day) of natural gas for its 700 MW power plant in Bidadi. The project is due to be ready by 2015.
Apart from Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa will also benefit from the Dabhol-Bangalore pipeline.
