Minister of Mines, Dinsha Patel justified the increase in export duty on iron ore saying that such a measure would discourage export of the key raw material and increase domestic availability of the same.
Export of iron ore is regulated through fiscal measure by imposition of export duty. Accordingly the central government raised the export duty on iron ore from 20 percent to 30 percent advalorem on all grades of iron ore with effect from December 30, 2011, he informed the Lok Sabha.
He also said that in the 11th Report of Committee on Public Undertaking regarding comprehensive examination of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam the committee has interalia recommended that injudicious export of raw natural resources like iron ore, coal needs to be banned.
