During 2013-14, union shipping ministry plans to award 30 port projects worth around Rs 25,000 crore investment.

Union Shipping Minister GK Vasan informed media persons that these projects would bring in an additional capacity of 288 million tonne per annum at an estimated investment of Rs 24,633 crore.

In 2012-13, the ministry awarded 32 projects which will add a capacity of about 137 million tonne per annum at an estimated investment of Rs 6,765 crore.

Recently, DP World signed the concession agreement with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust for the development of a container terminal in Navi Mumbai.
The project would be executed on DBFOT (Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer) basis.

Shipping Minister GK Vasan and Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman of DP World exchanged the concession document.

JNPT, which is one of the 12 major ports in the country, currently handles 44 per cent of the country’s container cargo.

The 12 major ports in the country are Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, Kolkata (with Haldia), Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Cochin, Paradip, New Mangalore, Marmagao, Ennore, Tuticorin and Kandla.
