Ministry sets up panel for 2nd major port in Gujarat

Union Minister of State for Shipping Milind Deora informed that his ministry set up a panel to study the feasibility of setting up another major port in Gujarat on the lines of Kandla Port.

It is learnt that the committee will explore locations at which this second major port could come up. Gujarat already has one major and over 20 minor ports including Mundra, Pipavav, Okha, Dahej, Hazira and others.

It is also learnt that both the state government and the union shipping ministry have been holding talks for the last two years to set up a second major port in the state.

The union shipping ministry asked the state government to nominate a member of the committee Deora said during his recent visit to the Kandla Port Trust (KPT).

In another development, KPT, which is working on setting up four multi-purpose cargo berths at Kandla to expand its operation. These berths would enable the port to handle over 100 million tonne of cargo by 2012-13. In the last financial year (2011-12), Kandla clocked 82.5 million tonne per annum of cargo.

Besides, the country’s largest major port, is constructing a Rs 1,060-crore dry bulk terminal at Tuna (having a capacity of 14.11 million tonne per annum) which is being developed as a satellite port in the Gulf of Kutch.
