Mitsui OSK Lines roped in a salvage company to rescue the cargo and hulls of a 300-metre long container ship MOL Comfort, which broke into two parts mid sea about 530 nautical miles off Goa.
The company claimed that there was no large volume of oil leakage owing to the incident. Majority of the cargo is confirmed to be aboard the fore and aft part of he ship. However, some of the containers may be lost or damaged during the incident, reports indicate. All 26 crew members were rescued, the company claimed.
Goa Chief Minister Manohar said the ship broke because of inclement weather and clarified that there was no immediate danger to the Goa coastline.
Mitsui OSK Lines also deployed several tugs to tow the ship to safety. Parrikar said the real danger could be the containers, which were floating in the sea, posing a threat to other ships.
The Indian Coast Guard and Navy are monitoring the situation closely and they would prevent parts of the vessel from entering the Exclusive Economic Zone (300 nautical miles) off the coast.
Parrikar allayed concerns by saying that the chances of the vessel being salvaged are high and the vessel was still in international waters far from the Goa coast.
