The Maharashtra government has decided to revive the development of an all-weather port at Wadhwan. In a joint venture, Maharashtra Maritime Board and Jawaharlal Nehru Port are currently in talks to fix the handling capacity up to 100 million tonne annually. The project entails an investment of Rs 10,000 crore.
A senior state government official says: ¨The Union shipping ministry has held at least four meetings with the representatives of Maharashtra Maritime Board and JNPT to discuss the project and its viability.¨
The other ports being proposed and those operational in the state include Rewas, Dighi, Jaigad, Vijaydurg, Redi, and Karanja, he adds.
Shipping and ports expert Atul Kulkarni says, ¨Sufficient land, rail and road connectivity, and proximity to the industrial centre are available. The Mumbai Port is 140 years old, while Jawaharlal Nehru Port has exhausted the water front.¨
