To establish a mechanised system for coal and coke handling facility at berth No 11 in Mormugao Port, the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) has sought the approval of the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB). The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 200 crore and two million tonne of coal and coke would be handled per annum.
The MPT has decided to develop berth No 11 for coal and coke handling on a public private partnership (PPP) basis and the project is being allotted to Gammon India. The project would cover an area of 19.25 hectares. The State pollution control board would place the MPT’s appeal before the next board meeting for a final decision.
Coal and coke handling operations at berth No. 10 and 11 in the port were stopped in last September, saying that measures taken are not adequate to control pollution. GSPCB had revoked the consent to operate in light of air pollution in Vasco town arising due to inefficient implementation of pollution control measures.
