Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) is reworking the design of its proposed fifth container terminal along with a ship repair facility after it was forced to clear the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL) Project.
The port has to look at other alternatives, as the link will now pass through the waters where it had planned fifth terminal, said L Radhakrishnan, Chairman of JNPT.
The proposed Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link would pass through the waters of JNPT where the container port was earlier planning a new container terminal. The link will connect Mumbai to the satellite township of Navi Mumbai through the 22-kilometre bridge. The link may hinder movement of large ships.
Earlier, JNPT asked the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to raise the height and alignment of the link to 51 metre on a 300-metre stretch to allow passage of bigger vessels.
But when the Prime Minister asked the union shipping minister to review the situation, JNPT yielded to the request and decided to give its nod to the project.
According to some estimate, the cost of the container terminal project could be anywhere close to Rs 30,000 crore.
The port is planning to build a mega terminal at Nhava Sheva that would raise its capacity by 8-10 million twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, as it rushes to meet competition from private players that are growing at a much faster rate.
