To remove bottlenecks in widening of roads in Mumbai, the Bruhanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to form a special cell that will be staffed with retired officials. The cell will be tasked with identifying and help in removal of bottlenecks on roads so that their widening can be expedited.
Several road expansion projects have been pending due to bottlenecks. According to officials, the civic body faces several hurdles while executing road-widening projects due to slums. The cell will ascertain whether the slumdwellers living in the shanties declared as bottlenecks are eligible for alternative accommodation and pursue their rehabilitation.
A civic official said that the cell will have retired civic and collectors’ department officials as there are times when a bottleneck is on the collector’s land. The cell will be operational in the next two months.
Slums along LBS Road have proved to be a major hurdle to its expansion, as a result the project has been pending. Bottlenecks are responsible for traffic congestion in Mumbai, as these illegal structures—residential and commercial—constrict space on footpaths and roads.
The BMC has been planning a bottleneck policy for the last five years, but lack of provision for compensating owners was a hurdle.
