National Aluminium Company (Nalco) was incorporated in 1981 as a public sector enterprise of the central government and it has Asia’s largest integrated aluminium complex, encompassing bauxite mining, alumina refining, aluminium smelting and casting, power generation, rail and port operations.
The company is planning to set up in Kutch a 1 million tonne per annum alumina refinery in collaboration with GMDC of Gujarat where the latter would supply bauxite for 25 years and own own 26 percent equity in the project. According to the company website, both the companies are finalizing agreements for the project, which is expected to be completed by 2017.
The company also plans to set up a 4.2 mn tpa bauxite and 1.4 mn tpa alumina facilities based on Gudem and KR Konda bauxite reserves at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The firm prepared a pre-feasibility report in Jun 2009 for the project. Presently, it is awaiting forest clearance for detailed exploration of KR Konda blocks, the firm said in its website.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that the company plans to engage a surface miner to cut and generate 1,500,000 mn t of bauxite or laterite in Panchpatmaii Bauxite Mines in Odisha.
