Rae Bareilly’s Fursatganj airport that houses the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi (IGRUA) will soon have a world class national aviation university at an investment of Rs 150-200 crore. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on March 25 held a meeting with top aviation ministry officials — who are ex-officio members of IGRUA — and now the place is all set to get the swanky aviation university.
The governing council of IGRUA (Rahul Gandhi and aviation ministry brass) will finalise the plan for the university and send it to the Union Cabinet for clearance since IGRAU is funded by the Central government. The Cabinet note will soon be finalised, sources said. The governing council is headed by aviation secretary KN Shrivastava and the aviation minister is not a part of it.
But with Rahul Gandhi coming for the deliberations, the Union Minister of State for Aviation — Kerala Congress leader KC Vengupal — was also in attendance at the council’s meeting. In addition to the university whose course structure is being worked out by a top global consultancy firm, a number of other plans are also in the works for IGRUA.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is in talks with the state government to get about 250 acres more so that the existing small airstrip can be extended by another 9,000 feet. The idea is to then have an aircraft maintenance engineering (AME) facility there. AAI is to build the AME building which would then be run by IGRUA.
