Stating that toll collected from commuters is for maintenance of the respective roads, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has stated that it would start collecting toll at Brahmarakootlu between Mangalore and BC Road from December 5. The NHAI has issued a notification to this effect.

The toll collected is to be spent for maintaining the highway between Mangalore and BC Road, widened under the Port Connectivity Project. There was no link to this project and the bridge fee being collected at Panemangalore between BC Road and Kalladkka from the Mangalore Division of the National Highways under the State Public Works Department.

Bridge fee was being collected by the State government since 2003 for building a new bridge across the Nethravati.
