In the first six months of the current fiscal, the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has recorded a growth of 15.78 per cent in cargo handling. The port handled 19.37 million tonne of cargo during April-September of 2013-14, against 16.73 million tonne in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, the port said.
For the port’s cargo growth, cargoes such as crude oil, petroleum products and coal have contributed a lot. The crude import of MRPL (Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals) through NMPT stood at 7.26 million tonne (6.49 million tonne), and the export of petroleum products from the refinery through the port stood at 4.01 million tonne (3.30 million tonne). MRPL is a major user of NMPT.
Coal handling growth also contributed to growth in railway-bound cargo from NMPT. The port handled 3.56 million tonne of railway-bound cargo during the first six months of 2013-14 (2.62 million tonnes), recording a growth of 35.87 per cent. Container cargo handling at the port rose 2.23 per cent during the period.
