P Tamilvanan, Chairman of the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) informed media persons that the port was conducting trial operation at the new berth for handling petroleum products.

The port has already completed civil works on the berth, which can handle ships of 1.25 lakh DWT (dead weight tonnage). (DWT is a measure of how much weight a ship can carry safely).

The port would finance the multipurpose berth project, which is estimated to cost around Rs 137 crore, from its internal resources.

Work on the construction of a bulk cement terminal by Ambuja Cements is nearing completion. The terminal will have capacity to handle 1 million tonne (mn t) of cement per year. The port handled 2.62 lakh tonne (2.54 lakh tonne) of cement during 2012-13.

Meanwhile, Tamilvanan said the port signed an agreement with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, and Mitsui of Japan for carrying out a feasibility study on the establishment of a liquefied natural gas terminal at New Mangalore.
