The New Mangalore Port, which recorded a 12.43 percent growth in cargo volume in 2012-13 at 37.04 million tonne (mn t), may announce about Rs 138 crore of net surplus during the year, reports indicate.

If the port is able to post the above net surplus, then it would be the 8th consecutive year that the figure exceeds Rs 100 crore, reports suggest.

Meanwhile, the cargo volume in 2012-13 is said to be the highest ever posted by the port exceeding the previous record of 36.69 mn t handled in 2008-09.

Of the total cargo volume in 2012-13, import traffic constitutes 27.32 mn t compared to 23.68 mn t in 2011-12. The port handled box traffic of 48,409 Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU), which is more than the previous record of 45,009 TEU handled in 2011-12 (with a growth of 7.55 percent).

However, the port witnessed decline in the iron pellets and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cargoes during 2012-13.

The port undertook the work of improving the port roads in a phased manner. So far a sum of Rs 88.75 crore was spent for roads and storage sheds.
