The Union government has taken up development of National Highways (NHs) under the National Highways Development Project (NHDP) & Non-NHDP, said the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Sarvey Sathyanarayana. He added that there is no scheme for development of NHs with funding assistance from the State Governments.
There are seven phases of NHDP covering about 47,000 km length. Under Non-NHDP, major programmes include improvement of riding quality, widening/strengthening of existing pavement, construction of bridges/culverts etc.
Besides, for development of road network in North Eastern part of the country, a Special Accelerated Road Development Programme including Arunachal Pradesh package covering about 6,418 km length of roads including State roads have been taken up.
Similarly, for development of roads in Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas, about 5,477 km length of roads including State roads have also been taken up.
