To improve connectivity to the Ennore port and to boost industrial growth in the North Chennai, the Tamil Nadu government has revived the Northern Port Access (NPA) Road project to connect the Ennore port with Thatchur near Panchetti on Chennai Kolkata Highway. The State Highways Department has entrusted the work of updating the detailed project report for the NPA road project to a consultant.

A few years ago, the project was proposed by the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), but it remained only on paper. Following TIDCO’s request, the industries department, on April 23, 2012, issued an order to take over the NPA road project from the National Highways Authority of India and appointed the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC) as the managing associate of the project.

The feasibility report for the NPA road project prepared by a consultant at the behest of the NHAI in 2008 was outdated in view of changes by the way of new structures and land development all along the proposed road alignment. Niranjan Mardi, Principal Secretary of the Highways and Minor Port Department, has sanctioned Rs 21.65 lakh for TNRDC to engage a consultant to update the DPR for the project.
