In a first, 24.2 metre-wide elevated roads will be constructed in Delhi on a single narrow column using the single-pier technique. In this, six lanes of traffic will move on top, while four lanes will be open at the ground level as well. These elevated flyways are being built on outer Ring Road and Ring Road, and will help avoid traffic congestion at the ground level, say officials.

PWD sources said that the single-pier technology has been used in Delhi earlier too, but for narrower flyways. Constructing 24.2m wide elevated portions was unheard of in the city before this, but it is planned to do this through careful design.

Launchers will be used to place these pier segments both longitudinally and transversely through ‘pres-stressing’, said the official. Tar will be placed both ways. The central spine and two wings on either side — each nine metres wide — will be brought together. This process will begin around three months into the start of the project, added the official.

Each of the seven elevated flyways on outer Ring Road’s west Delhi portion will be constructed using this technology. Even the ground level road, below these flyways, will be widened to ensure maximum space for traffic movement.
