Numaligarh Refinery (NRL), a subsidiary of Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) plans to expand its refining capacity from 3.0 million metric tonne per annum (mn tpa) to 8-9 mn tpa at Golaghat in Assam. The company is also considering options of sourcing and transporting the additional crude oil through a pipeline.
The company is learnt to have allocated Rs 8,955 crore for the proposed projects under 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17). During the plan period, the firm also considers to diversify into sectors with "promising potential" such as power generation, pipelines, exploration and production.
Weekly Insight learns that NRL plans to engage a contractor for studying the proposed refinery expansion project in Assam.
