A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been entered into among the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) and consortium of partners consisting of NTPC Ltd (as lead partner), Power Grid, PFC (Power Finance Corporation) Ltd., IREDA (Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency) Ltd., PTC and GPCL (Gujarat Power Corporation) in the presence of Piyush Goyal, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Coal , New & Renewable Energy , Upendra Tripathy, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Dr Arup Roy Choudhury, CMD, NTPC and other esteemed dignitaries. India has a long coastline of over 7,600 km with its sizeable potential for offshore wind power development offers ample business opportunities.
NTPC shall be the lead partner in the consortium proposed to be formed for the development of Offshore Wind Power in India as per the MoU. The foray in offshore wind project development shall help NTPC in its endeavour to diversify its generation base into the greener renewable based capacity. NTPC, being the leader in Power Industry in India, shall play a lead role in this developmental project(s), paving way for tapping this unexplored potential for the first time in the country.
