The proposed inland waterway linking Kalinganagar industrial area, and eventually Talcher, to Paradip and Dhamra ports is to be ready in three years. The state government signing an MoU with the Inland Waterway Authority of India (IWAI) and the two ports in the state capital. The proposed waterway on river Brahmani and the Mahanadi delta will link the industrial area of Kalinganagar, site of Tata Steel’s upcoming 3 mt steel plant, to the two ports significantly reducing dependence on road and rail. Kalinganagar in Jajpur district is already home to plants of Jindal Stainless Steel, Neelachal Ispat, Mesco and Visa Steel among others.
While the original project was estimated to cost more than Rs 4,200 crore, IWAI has assigned Water and Power Consultancy Services for a current estimate. The stretch of dredged river will allow barges to carry coal, ore and steel between industry and port.
