ONGC has started drilling of shale gas at the Kanteri village in Barkagaon police station area of Hazaribag district. Corporate Communication Chief of ONGC, Bokaro, R Prasad said that in other parts of the world like the US shale gas wells have started in large scale but in India it will be a new experiment at Kanteri. Under this procedure, gas wells will be made by drilling the rocks on the hills of the Barkagaon region. Prasad said ONGC is at present operating in four districts in Jharkhand – Bokaro, Dhanbad, Ramgarh and Hazaribag – for drilling 74 coal-bedded methane gas wells.
A survey in 2010 revealed that gas was available underground in the villages. Besides, Kanteri gas was also available in three other villages, Dangia, Taleswaa and Chemgara.
Prasad said that ONGC´s gas production has started from the Jharia belt in Dhanbad district and commercial operation will be decided by the ONGC headquarter at an appropriate time. He said that in the four districts of Jharkhand the expected production of coal bearing methane gas will be 10 million cu m of gas when it will start production between six months to one year in 2014.
