The Maharashtra Economic Survey for 2021-22 revealed that over Rs 31,916 crore has been spent since 2016 for constructing 10 Metro corridors of about 180 km in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The survey further suggested that the corridors are expected to be ready by 2024. Hence, MMR will have metro connectivity of nearly 200 km.
Overall a total cost of Rs 98,724 crore is to be incurred on the construction, having a capacity to carry approximately five million commuters every day. As of January 2022, more than Rs 31,916 crore have been spent out of which the total expected expenditure is 31%.
The maximum expenditure has been incurred for the construction of the three Metro corridors which include Dahisar-Andheri Metro-2A, Dahisar East Andheri East Metro-7 corridor, and the 32-km-long Colaba-Seepz Metro-3.
The expected cost of the project for Metro-3 is Rs 33,406 crore, and Rs 19,967 crore has already been spent. The Metro-3 is by far the most controversial project in MMR which had to be fully operational by the end of 2022, however, is stuck because of a lack of clarity on the construction of the Metro car depot. Therefore, the Metro-3 corridor cannot be expected to be operational before the end of 2024.
Metro-2A has the second-highest expenditure of Rs 3,816 crore and the expected cost of the project is Rs 6,410 crore. The Metro-7 corridor has the third-highest expenditure of Rs 3,017 crore and the expected cost of the project is Rs 6,208 crore.
