Tamilvanan, Chairman of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) informed that Pacific International Lines (PIL) will operate a mainline ship from New Mangalore to Mombassa in Africa. The service will have calls at Karachi in Pakistan and Jabel Ali in the Gulf region enroute.

The mainline ship – mv Kota Anggerik – will carry over 300 boxes, including empty containers to Mombassa in Africa from New Mangalore. The export cargo in the vessel include cashew kernels to the Gulf region and liquid glucose to Mombassa, Praveen Bangera, Deputy General Manager of Seaways Group (the agent for PIL in Mangalore).

Four years ago, mainline container vessels started calling at the port in a small way. Mainline ships are used for importing raw cashew nuts from Africa to the port, the chairman said.

Tamilvanan further informed that the port would complete dredging for the fresh berth, which will handle petroleum products, in another two weeks. Civil works on this berth have already been finished, he added. The berth can handle 7.8 million tonne of petroleum cargo a year.
