The Planning Commission expects that India may require 30 functional airports within the next five years. The Commission expects passenger terminal capacity in most of the airports to be between 230-240 million in the current year.

The above estimates of the commission come even as many airport projects in the country are facing hurdles. Meanwhile, in a bid to overcome the problems with land acquisition and shortage of land, the Karnataka government is planning to build airports on land of just 100 acre. The Infrastructure Development Department is currently carrying out surveys in three districts of Gadag, Chikmagalur and Raichur, for expanding air operations in the state. It is expected that the proposals would be completed in the next two months. In order to operate chartered aircraft and other small 8-10 seater aircraft, the state is planning small airports.
