Planning Commission deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia asked Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to promote private participation in the development of physical infrastructure.
Ahluwalia urged Goa to try and cover all urban areas with sewerage network using latest technology to achieve the goal of total sanitation in the state.
He offered the Planning Commission’s full support to Goa in solid waste management and to make Goa plastic free.
Ahluwalia said this while discussing the annual plan outlay for the state. The commission approved an annual plan size of Rs 4,715 crore for 2013-14 to the state compared to Rs 4,700 crore in the previous year.
But the plan outlay is far less than the Rs 5,250 crore sought by Parrikar besides central assistance of Rs 380 crore for various initiatives.
The central assistance was sought for solid waste management and plastic-free Goa-Rs 150 crore, Dabolim expansion- Rs 50 crore, green initiative in governance- Rs 20 crore and Lusofonia games- Rs 160 crore.
During the meeting, Parrikar mentioned Goa’s “mining debacle” and said that the overall effect to the Goan economy would be close to Rs 17,000 crore where shortfall in the state’s revenue was Rs 1,500 crore. He reiterated his request for a one-time grant of Rs 3,000 crore to compensate those affected by the closure of mining.
