By 2013, all PowerGrid sub-stations will be remotely controlled by the National Transmission Asset Management Centre at Manesar, said RN Nayak, Chairman and Managing Director, PowerGrid. There will be cameras observing the functioning of devices and equipment and the stations will be virtually managed remotely, he said, adding that having eight persons per sub-station was a waste of manpower.

Nayak assured all help to the electrical industry for the indigenous manufacture of new products and advised them to manufacture line arresters and metal oxide varistor (MOV) devices. A varistor is an electronic component used to protect circuits against excessive transient voltages. Nayak said that line arresters are the future. The government is ready to give its full support to the industry, but the industry should focus on manufacturing line arresters as these are urgently needed in the transmission lines in north Bengal, evacuating power from the North Eastern States, he said.
