Road projects under the Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) are stranded because of land acquisition issues.
The state government asked the central government to allocate Rs 710 crore from the Prime MinisterÂ’s Reconstruction Programme (PMRP) for compensating land owners.
The road projects under the PMGSY in the state may not progress until the requisitioned assistance was provided for the land compensation, J&K Chief Secretary Iqbal Khanday said.
It is learnt that out of the 10,200 kilometre of the road length sanctioned by his ministry, work on 2,000 kilometre had been adversely affected because of non-acquisition of land in J&K.
However the centre maintains that the PMGSY has no provision for land compensation in any state. The J&K team pleaded the State’s case on the precedent of Rs. 577 crore that had been previously provided “as a special case” from the PMRP.
Meanwhile, Union Minister of Rural Development Jairam Ramesh has brought the issue to the attention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The issue was also discussed at a high-level Central team, led by Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth and Prime MinisterÂ’s advisor S Ramadorai, in Jammu on April 13.
