The current IATA head and exBritish Airways CEO, Walsh, is renowned for pragmatic leadership and transformative restructuring that paved the way for successful global mergers.

In what several commentators have described as a strategic shake‑up, IndiGo, India’s largest carrier by fleet and market share, announced the appointment of William “Willie” Walsh as CEO.

In a statement released on Monday, the Gurugram‑headquartered airline said the appointment is subject to regulatory approvals. Walsh, currently serving as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), completes his tenure at the global trade association on July 31 and is expected to assume charge at IndiGo by August 3.

The announcement by the board of InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, IndiGo’s listed parent company, comes within three weeks of the exit of former CEO Pieter Elbers. Elbers resigned on March 10, after his leadership came under scrutiny following IndiGo’s worst-ever operational crisis in December 2025, when the airline cancelled more than 2,500 flights and delayed nearly 1,850 flights over three days, affecting hundreds of thousands of passengers.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation subsequently ordered a high-level probe overseen by senior DGCA officials, with preliminary findings blaming crew scheduling failures and inadequate contingency planning, while also criticising DGCA for lapses in oversight.

Welcoming Walsh, Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta said, “He is an exceptional global aviation leader with a stellar track record of outstanding leadership across several airlines. His experience in managing large‑scale airline operations and navigating complex market dynamics makes him ideally suited to strengthen and lead IndiGo for continued growth in an ever‑evolving and competitive international aviation environment.”

Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director, added, “As we enter a new phase of transformation and growth, I am delighted to welcome Willie to IndiGo. He is an iconic and accomplished aviation leader and brings a rare combination of global perspective, operational expertise, deep industry experience and values‑driven leadership, making him exceptionally suited to lead IndiGo at this pivotal cusp of growth.”

Steering IndiGo Forward

As CEO, Walsh will be responsible for overall management and strategic direction, focusing on operational performance, network expansion, and customer experience. He will work closely with the board and leadership team to position IndiGo for its next phase of growth.

Commenting on his appointment, Walsh said, “The airline has a strong foundation, a compelling vision and an exceptional reputation. What stands out most to me are its people, their passion, professionalism and commitment. The aviation landscape is evolving rapidly, and IndiGo is extremely well‑positioned to be at the forefront of this change.”

Walsh has formerly served as CEO of British Airways and International Airlines Group (IAG), a holding company which owns Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Level and Vueling. He is widely considered one of the most successful and influential leaders in modern aviation history, admired for pragmatic management, complex restructuring, and successful mergers and acquisitions.
